Mrs Swenson was a teacher in the Amsterdam School District for 32 years. She believed that reading was the key to learning.
After she retired, she helped students learn to read and get their High School Diploma. She also helped run a program where she started giving away books to both children and adults.
It is from these two things that the idea of providing books to elementary students was born. After she died, her family set up a fund to help pay for these books.
